Step 2: Pick an Exchange

Your money will spend most of its time sitting on an exchange. Pick wrong and you overpay on fees at best — or lose everything at worst. Standards first, then the verdict.

Five criteria for choosing an exchange

  1. Size and liquidity. High-volume platforms have tight spreads and little slippage on large orders — and a relatively lower chance of vanishing. Beginners only need the global top tier.
  2. Fees. Spot rates cluster at 0.08%–0.10% and look similar; futures taker rates run 0.05%–0.06%, which compounds into real money for active traders. Run the comparison table and calculator below.
  3. Security record. Has it suffered major hacks? Does it publish proof of reserves? When things went wrong, did users get compensated? Hard indicators, all of them.
  4. Language and support. When something breaks, can you reach a human and read the interface? For beginners this matters more than it sounds.
  5. Funding rails. Does it support P2P fiat trading in your currency, are withdrawals smooth, are there odd limits?

Three traps you must avoid

  • Obscure exchanges you've never heard of."Zero fees" and "sign-up bonus" pitches are bait. Small platforms misappropriating funds, wicking prices, or exiting with user money make the news every single year.
  • "Mentor" groups and managed accounts.Anyone asking you to send money to a person or an unknown platform to "trade for you" is running the oldest script in the book.
  • Fake apps and fake websites.Download only from official sites or official app stores. The "official site" in search ads is often a lookalike — one extra letter in the domain can cost you everything.
Good to know:signing up through our rebate links doesn't change your fee schedule — the exchange returns part of its fee to you. Same price, built-in discount. Every link is disclosed.

Platform picked? Next up is sign-up and verification — about 10 minutes if you have your ID ready, and there's a way to pass on the first try.
